I hit some baler twine wiht my lawn tractor while mowing and burntthe front PTO clutch (it works intermittantly now, not very pretty).Unfortunately, I can not find a replacement clutch and would like someassistance or direction. The machine is a Sperry Rand NEW HOLLAND S-12serial number 149757 wiht a Kohler engine model K3018 spec 47404b serialnumber 2416221 The electromagnetic clutch is the round mount model withmounting bolts 4" o.c. The Airens crossover gives me a square mount whichdoes not line up. Surely, there must be a few of these out there! Anyideas? John A Sykas (570)623-3000

John do you hear a click each time you try to engage the clutch, even when it does not work. If it clicks each time, then it may just need to be adjusted. It has been several years since I owned a tractor with this kind of clutch. As I remember you need a feeler gauge to set the gap between the clutch plates. The Airens dealer should have tis spec. Hope this helps. ....

The clutch actually engages for a minute then kicks out, back in again, etc. Sounds like a bad wire, but the voltage reads OK and steady. The cluthc looks good, but the electromagnet looks pretty crispy. I can see bare wire in this peice. This clutch has no tension adjusting screws. It is old as the pulley assembly is cast iron. I did take it fully apart, cleaned etc.
I am pretty sure it will need the mount piece.

More and more my friends and I are getting things like this re-wound. Yours sounds like it is getting hot and either shorting or tripping an internal breaker. Either way it is probable that all it neeeds are the coils rewound. If you have an electric motor repair shop near to you it could be worth a visit. ....

I can not find anyone locally who would rewind. Do you know a facility where I could ship it, have the unit rewound and returned? ....

I don't know of any big ones. I usually rewind things myself or else take it down to the electric motor shop and talk about coils, wire, and magnetic things till their eyes glaze over and hope that they offer to "take a look at it". I had a similar situation with a ford lgt-145. I thought my clutch needed replaced, but found that it was not the clutch but my deck not wanting to turn easily. I found bunches of the baler twine wrapped up tightly in the spindles causing excessive friction. Apparently the clutch sensed the overload and would open the circuit. Long story short, it was an easy fix once I got my deck cleaned up. It's a longshot but worth a look. Best of luck. ....

Attached ar 4 photos of the clutch. You can see the windings are pretty much burnt.
Probably any clutch with 4" oc mounting on a 1" shaft would work.
Any ideas ....
